| Catherine Newman, senior fundraiser at Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, was a visitor to our club in November, who came to collect a cheque for £2000. This was part of the money raised by the club at our summer Music in the Gardens event. An excellent ambassador or the hospital, she explained to the club all the investment being made in Cancer treatment at the hospital, and all the different age groups who actually attend for treatment. We were surprised to learn that thousands of people attend the hospital every week from all over the region. | Recently, the Derbyshire and South Yorkshire branches of the Dry Stone Walling Association (DSWA) combined their efforts to build an 11 metre dry stone wall to mark the car park entrance to the Rotary Centre, Castleton. Read on ENVIRONMENT AWARD FOR SHEFFIELD CLUB ROTARIAN | David Pollard, Environment officer at the Rotary Club of Sheffield, and District1270, has been awarded at Rotary District 1270’s September meeting, the District Environment Award for 2009.
| David has been active since becoming District Environment Officer giving talks to district clubs, and delivering sales of the award winning Standby Saver. These can benefit the environment so that on one side, will cut up to 100% of standby power in the home, and on the other, benefit the Rotary CO2 Trust with a £2.50 payment. David is available to give a presentation to any group interested in the global warming crisis, and in how individuals may respond to it. | The evening started with a down pour rain, but this did not put the visitors off. First on stage "Highly Strung" talented young players from High Storrs, King Edward VII, Silverdale and Tapton Secondary Schools, directed by Martin Cropper and Liz Hanks. | They came from Bulgaria, Russia, Rumania and former Yugoslavia joining young people from Iceland, Isreal, Egypt, Turkey, Japan and Portugal with the occasional Foundation Scholar and Youth Exchange from Australia, and the USA. Fronted by John Naylor, the Dizzies perform a mix of original and classics compositions from a vast repertoire to ensure that the evening goes with a bang. The event features a lively start by the Dixie playing New Orleans Strollers. Then the first on stage were is the New Orleans band Bad Boy Bobby Ludlam performing a set of hot treditional and Dixieland Jazz. They are followed by the great Hammond grooves of Joel White's five piece, band performing songs from the Blue Note and Atlantic record label catalogue. | Formally attired guests, and some of the City's greatest sportsmaen enjoyed an evening of excellent fair speechers by Ex Leeds United and England player Norman Hunter, and comic speaker Lea Roberts. Funds were raised for the Sheffield Alzheimers Association and Rotary charities. A cheque for £3000 was subsequently presented to the Alzheimers Association. The next sporting dinner will be held in March 2009. The weekend conference was filled with excellent presentations and effective speakers brought delegates up to date on current charitable challengers. On Saturday evening, a themed dinner and dance allowed the Sheffield contingent an opportunity to stand out at the African themed evening. Club President, David Pollard, can be seen near the centre with a very large headress! Walk Sheffield's Heritage has sold nearly all of its 5,000 print run, making in total over £4,000 for Club funds in the process. The idea came about five years ago from the need to produce income to pay our Rotary Foundation dues, which were often falling short of the targetset by District at the time.
